If you need a strong advocate in your corner, you can’t get much better than Carrie Sinkowski.
Sinkowski is a second-generation Doverite with immigrant grandparents who moved to the Lakeside town and called it home.
Since a young age, Sinkowski saw her grandfather helping out as many people as possible without any wish of recognition as that inspired her.
Mix that with an environment while growing up that strongly encouraged her to raise her voice against something she did not agree with and be proud of the person she is it lead to building blocks of who Sinkowski is as a person.
She took that passion to help over and advocate and literally put it to work, becoming the Community Developer for Community Legal Clinic of Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk having previously been a community developer for the Sexual Assault Centre in Brant.
She still has ties to that program as well after creating a program titled Taylor the Turtle.
She created this program in 2011 after delivering previous programs around sexual assault to area high schools and elementary schools and seeing an issue with the subject and how it was being delivered.
Especially in elementary school, Sinkowski saw kids being overwhelmed by it and it was also upsetting kids with it’s good touch, bad touch lessons.
Her six-section course doesn’t go this route, but rather talking safely about your body and who to share concerns with.
She also spends her time with a Speaker School program she created to help people in the community raise their voice when it comes to concerns to make sure they can get their message out there properly while they are advocating for change.
Sinkowski is likely best known for her development of the Farms of Norfolk Football Association Tournament where migrant workers team up with Norfolk County farmers and take on other local farms in a soccer tournament.
While this year had to sadly be scrapped, last year saw big crowds show up and offered a sense of being at home for migrant workers who spend months away from their family coming down to Norfolk to work.
