A protest outside of Town Hall with Mayor Kristal Chopp and Mayor Ken Hewitt at the forefront.
Hairdressers and others gathered out front of the Simcoe location where Chopp and Hewitt each had a haircut, protesting the fact that Haldimand and Norfolk are not allowed to move onto phase 2 in Ontario with other health districts.
Hewitt said if you look at our local cases, he doesn’t believe it warrants us being excluded.
When asked about the fact that this protest broke two provincial rules – a gathering of more than 5 people and getting a haircut – Hewitt admits he does expect some backlash.
The idea stems from a phone call Chopp received yesterday while the Ford government was announcing the reopening – hearing from a business owner that if they don’t open up soon their salon would likely go under.
Adding to this, Chopp felt it was not well planned out as local residents can easily drive a few minutes out of town and get the services they want while local businesses struggle.
We did three Facebook live videos.
