Brantford Police are issuing an urgent reminder to local businesses after a spike in counterfeit money reports this year.
As of April, police have logged 52 incidents involving fake Canadian bills—mainly $50 and $100 denominations.
The fake bills are often marked with the words “Prop Money” in the holographic window and have discoloured or peeling surfaces.
Some of the bills share identical serial numbers, including GRJ6710018 through GRJ6710022. These same numbers have also been reported in other parts of Canada.
So far, five individuals have been charged in connection with counterfeit money in Brantford this year.
Police are asking businesses to be vigilant and to carefully inspect all large-denomination bills.
They recommend using UV light detectors or checking for inconsistencies in the bill’s material and hologram.
Anyone who encounters suspected counterfeit currency should report it immediately to police.
