Lions Past President Barry LaPlante speaks to Council
The Simcoe Lions Club is moving ahead with its ambitious plan to upgrade Wellington Park, beginning with the installation of a large gazebo. Club representative and past president Barry LaPlante presented phase one of the project to Norfolk County Council-in-Committee, highlighting the club’s commitment to revitalizing the park without seeking financial assistance from the municipality.
The 40-foot, 12-sided gazebo will be centrally located, featuring a concrete pad that connects to existing walkways. It will be well-lit to deter vandalism and include a water source. Built primarily from wood covered in heavy-duty vinyl for durability, the structure will have a metal roof for added protection.
LePlante put one request forward to council.
The project is estimated to cost $475,000, but the Lions Club is actively securing community donations and in-kind contributions to reduce expenses. The club has already pledged $100,000 to kickstart fundraising efforts. LePlante closed by pledging the Lions to the project.
Following LaPlante’s deputation, Council voted in favour of a motion to have staff bring back a report on the gazebo.
