Alex Vervaet has been a dedicated member of the Waterford Lions for 15 years, giving back to the community in many ways. He first joined after being invited to a meeting by the late Pete Shira. Drawn by the club’s mission, he quickly became involved.
One of the Lions’ biggest successes has been revitalizing the Pumpkin Festival, which had started to decline before the club took over. Now, the event is thriving, drawing large crowds each year—especially when the weather cooperates. The Lions also support local schools, funding nutrition programs and community projects like Campfire Circle. Their recent bottle drive raised $1,500 for the county’s new hospice.
Vervaet encourages others to join, noting that the club welcomes younger members and offers leadership opportunities. “Come out, enjoy a meal, and see what it’s about,” he says. “You’ll be part of something bigger, helping your community in ways you never imagined.”
