Ottawa is implementing a 25% tariff on hundreds of U.S. products, ranging from meat and milk to carpets and curtains, in retaliation for the new, hefty American tariffs on Canada.
A federal official also indicated that Canada plans to seek legal recourse over the U.S. violation of its international trade obligations.
On Sunday, the Canadian government unveiled a comprehensive list of retaliatory tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, just under 24 hours after U.S. President Donald Trump escalated tensions by pulling Canada into an unprecedented trade conflict.
In three weeks, Ottawa plans to add another $125 billion in tariffs on many other U.S. goods after consulting with industry.
