The Cancer Screening Mobile Coach will visit Simcoe for the first time on January 23rd, offering free cancer screenings. The coach will be at the Norfolk Family Health Team (185 Robinson St.), from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This initiative, a partnership between Cancer Care Ontario and Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Regional Cancer Program, provides cervical, breast, and colorectal cancer screenings. Taylor Patterson, Communications and Engagement for the Brantford Brant Norfolk Ontario Health Team (BBNOHT) says the goal is to break down barriers.
Other barriers include geographic challenges and religious or privacy concern. Patterson adds that in some cases it’s simply a lack of awareness.
The upcoming visit aligns with Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizing regular screenings for early cancer detection. Patterson tells us that currently 40% of eligable, individuals are overdue for screening.
The mobile unit is staffed by an all-female medical team. Eligible participants must have a health card or interim federal health benefits. Walk-ins are welcome, but booking ahead is recommended by calling 905-975-4467 or toll-free at 1-855-338-3131. If demand is high, the coach may return to Simcoe for future visits.
