One thing that goes hand in hand with winter weather is cars breaking down – and they always seem to do so at the worst time imaginable.
If you’re out driving around, CAA suggests that you always keep an emergency kit in your car in case you break down somewhere.
Kevin Puckett from CAA says there’s a few things that you should make sure are included in that kit.
Puckett emphasizes the need for some snacks in your car, in case you’re broken down for an extended period of time and need to keep your body fuelled. Puckett adds that you should keep your kit somewhere accessible, as it can be dangerous to get out of your car in whiteout conditions.
As far as making sure your car is ready to drive its best in the snow – Puckett says snow tires and lots of washer fluid are a recipe for success.
During the winter, CAA sees call volumes rise across Ontario – but not always for the snow.
Puckett says checking your battery at the start of winter is something you can do to avoid any untimely breakdowns.
With tow truck crews out in forces during the winter, you’re also reminded to move over and slow down when passing them, whether it be on residential roads or highways.
On highways, it is also illegal to pass snow plows that are working in an echelon formation on multi-lane roads or highways, if the speed limit is above 80 km/h. This can result in fines ranging from $150 to $1000.
