Ontario is introducing legislation that will help municipalities clear homeless encampments out of public parks and spaces.
Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Paul Calandra said the government has heard concerns from the public.
The government, instead, is looking at better ways to assist homeless individuals and giving tools to those in power to clear tents, and Calandra says the dangers that come with it.
Premier Doug Ford echoed Calandra’s statements, saying new measures are needed to handle the situation including stronger trespass laws.
The drug use Ford mentioned is a big concern for him, so he is giving more power to police to crack down on it.
An additional $75.5 million will also be invested toward homelessness prevention programs.
