What started as a modest farm market in the 1990s has grown into a cherished local fixture.
Sam’s Place, a family-owned business that’s worth the drive, has become a popular destination for both locals and out-of-town visitors alike.
We spoke to Owner Davina Komienski, who told us about the history of the business. In the 1990s the market began with her husband’s parents selling fresh produce from tents in front of their house. The original market closed in the early 2000s, but there was a desire from Davina and her husband to revive the business. Once she finished school, they restarted the venture with a wagon stand in front of their home. After four years of operating on a smaller scale, the couple decided to expand, eventually establishing the current market that stands today.
Sam’s Place is known for offering a mix of homegrown and locally sourced produce. During the summer months, visitors can find strawberries, cantaloupes, watermelons, sweet corn, and bell and shepherd peppers, all grown right on the farm. For other items like tropical fruits and stone fruits, the Davina sources from the Toronto food terminal, ensuring a diverse selection year-round.
While their customer base has grown over the years, Davina remain grateful for the steady support they’ve received from the community. Weekends often bring in first-time visitors who are passing by, but the couple also has many loyal customers who return weekly, or even several times a week, to buy fresh produce and connect with the owners.
Sam’s Place has officially closed for the season, but the owners are already looking forward to another busy year of providing fresh, local produce to the community.
