The SIU has cleared the Norfolk OPP of any wrong doing following a crash that took place in March.
On the 17th, officers were parked at the Delhi District German Home where festivities were ongoing to mark St. Patrick’s Day.
In the early morning hours they saw someone leave the building, unsteady on their feet, and then enter and start a vehicle.
Officers attempted to block the vehicle’s path but were too late and it accelerated out of the parking lot travelling north on James Street.
The Special Investigations Unit, based on evidence gathered, said the driver went into the Canadian Tire parking lot nearby, exited onto Church Street West, disregarded the stop sign at Main Street and approached a bend in the road west of Mill Street where he lost control and sent the vehicle onto the field of the Delhi Quance Park – ultimately crashing into a tree.
Officers were pursuing the driver as he went into the parking lot but pulled off to the side of the road after they saw the individual go through the stop sign.
The driver was taken to hospital and diagnosed with an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage.
The SIU said there is no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case.
