A rally was held at the crosswalk in front of Delhi District Secondary School on Friday, one week after a 15-year-old Xander Berry was struck by a vehicle.
NorfolkToday was there talking to those who attended, one of them being Xander.
He is scheduled for surgery and has had trouble walking due to injuries to his leg.
Xander’s mother Amanda was there advocating on behalf of her son and all students in the area.
She said this crosswalk is not safe, and the numbers don’t lie.
Right now, at the intersection, the flashing lights are not overhead but at the sides of the crosswalk, flashing a faint orange.
For Amanda, that is not enough.
One of the individuals in attendance was Lindsey Cooper, who had a very good reason for being there that day.
Less than a year after her daughter was struck by a car, she had to hear of another child being hit and little being done to “correct” the situation.
We also spoke to the crossing guard, who even during the brief time NorfolkToday was in attendance, had to yell at multiple cars who tried to cut around or go through as they were crossing with students.
He said this was a daily occurrence.
Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi-Ann Brady was in attendance as well, saying her office began looking into the matter as soon as it came to their attention.
She said being at the intersection, it’s clear more is needed.
She has got the ball rolling for change, though there is no definitive timeline.
Once we get more information about any possible changes regarding this crosswalk, we will provide you with that information.
The Berry family has started a petition, which can be found here.
