The Federal Government needs to take a close look at the model Indwell is using to help prevent homelessness and get to work immediately.
That’s the suggested findings coming out of a recent study done by Western University looking at best ways to move Canada’s most vulnerable from unhoused to housed.
The timing comes at Canada’s National Housing Strategy is coming under review, and while money has previous been earmarked for other projects, permanent supportive housing has been overlooked.
That was Professor Abe Oudshoorn, who lead the study with a team of researchers.
They chose to work with Indwell for a few reasons, the first one simply being convenience.
A new supportive housing unit had opened up in London, and it made studying the project much easier.
The second reason had to do with Indwell’s track record of continued growth in the industry having opened up several new housing units across southwestern Ontario while many others have struggled to get similar projects off the ground.
What they found was, when looking at Indwell’s model compared to a more traditional “affordable housing unit”, was that is really did help those most in need.
One of the biggest game changers for Indwell’s model is the fact that, when someone needed help, there was someone there to provide it – and that kept many people who had been homeless for years stable and inside a building.
Oudshoorn says with the National Housing Strategy being reviewed, he is urging the government to put money in the right place.
He suggested residents contact the MP’s and advocate for their support on this idea.
