With neighbouring Brantford warning residents about increased coyote sightings, Norfolk County is reminding residents to stay cautious and take steps to avoid conflicts with these wild animals.
Coyotes are a natural part of the local ecosystem and are found throughout Ontario, including in Norfolk County. While sightings here have been minimal this year, residents should remain vigilant, especially during spring when coyotes are raising their young and searching for food.
To reduce the risk of encounters:
- Never leave pet food or garbage outside.
- Keep cats indoors and supervise small dogs.
- If you see a coyote, stay calm, make yourself look bigger, and make loud noises to scare it away.
- Never run or turn your back on a coyote.
Coyote attacks on humans are extremely rare, but residents who spot a coyote near their home can report it to Norfolk County by-law services. More information is available through the Ministry of Natural Resources and City of Brantford websites.
