Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that Donald Trump’s new tariff regime could “fundamentally change the global trading system,” emphasizing Canada’s commitment to a strong economic response.
The former U.S. president unveiled a tariff policy on Wednesday that imposes a 10% baseline duty on most imports, with steeper levies on goods from the European Union, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Canada and Mexico were exempted from the latest tariffs but remain subject to previous trade restrictions tied to fentanyl concerns.
Carney stressed the importance of unity during economic crises, stating that Canada will act “with purpose and with force” in response to any challenges to its trade interests.
