The minimum wage in Ontario is going up once again.
This morning, the provincial government announced that the wage would be going up 40 cents an hour to $17.60 in October in a move to help support workers and businesses.
The increase would see a 40-hour-a-week worker earn an extra $835 a year, and will also make Ontario the province with the highest minimum wage. The province says roughly 36% of workers at or below the new minimum are in retail trade and 24 per cent are in accommodation and food services.
Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini says the government will continue to have the backs of Ontario workers, adding that fair, balanced wages are needed now more than ever.
The annual wage increase is based on the Ontario Consumer Price Index of 2.4%.
