It was a purrfect way to end the week—not just for students but also for one of Norfolk’s local cat shelters.
Every year, Lynndale Heights Public School runs a community initiative, with this year’s theme being Together We Can.
As part of the initiative, the Kindergarten classes brainstorm ways they can make a positive impact in their community.
That was teacher Julia Hammond, who was on hand Friday as students proudly presented a cheque for $1,300 to Purrfect Companions, a local cat rescue.
The fundraising effort took several steps and involved many helping hands along the way.
While the initiative started at Lynndale, it quickly gained momentum, spreading to the hallways of Simcoe Composite School. There, secondary teacher Caron Goodlet and her students in the Hospitality Reach Ahead Credit program rolled up their sleeves to help bake hundreds of cookies for the fundraiser.
That meant some of the students making the cookies were from Lynndale, but with growing demand, it soon became an all-hands-on-deck situation.
Once the cookies made their way back to Lynndale, the Kindergarten students took charge, packaging and preparing them for distribution.
Vicky Lachine, a volunteer with Purrfect Companions, was present to accept the donation.
She says they are always amazed by the generosity and kindness shown by the Norfolk community.
She also emphasized that the shelter relies solely on community donations, and contributions like this annual fundraiser make a significant difference.
