A Norfolk County resident lost $76,000 in a cryptocurrency scam, highlighting the importance of fraud awareness during Fraud Prevention Month.
On Monday, March 25th, the Norfolk County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of fraud. The victim had been lured by an online advertisement promoting a cryptocurrency investment opportunity. Soon after, they were contacted by someone claiming to be an investor who promised large returns.
Over five months, from October 2024 to March 2025, the victim invested approximately $76,000, only to realize they had been scammed when no returns came. They then contacted the police.
The incident occurred as the OPP continues to warn the public about fraud as part of Fraud Prevention Month in March. Scams like these are increasingly common, with fraudsters using social media, emails, and phone calls to target victims.
To protect yourself:
- Verify investment opportunities before sending money.
- Be cautious of promises of high returns with little risk.
- Never share personal or financial details with unknown sources.
