Fraud Prevention Month – Extortion Scams take many forms from releasing your google history to threats of a hired assassin

It’s Fraud Prevention Month and we are taking each day this week to highlight a specific scam targeting people in the province.

Fear is the main driving factor behind extortion scams.

Sgt. Ed Sanchuk with the West Region OPP says many people are aware of these scams – but it’s easy to be fooled when you are the one feeling the pinch.

There are many different branches of this scam as well, a lot so far off the beaten path that if you got the call, you would be concerned.

Similar to this is a hitman scam, where someone will claim there is a target on your head – but you can pay them to go away.

They’ll also target people with threats of being kicked out of the country.
