The federal privacy commissioner, Philippe Dufresne, has launched an investigation into whether social media platform X is complying with Canadian privacy laws.
Dufresne’s office will examine how X collects, uses, and discloses personal data—particularly whether the platform is using Canadians’ information to train artificial intelligence models. The investigation follows a request from NDP MP Brian Masse, who raised concerns about user data security.
An investigator has been assigned to the case, though Dufresne clarified that other issues Masse raised—such as government employees using X on their work devices—fall outside his jurisdiction.
This probe adds to growing scrutiny of how tech companies handle personal information in an era of AI-driven innovation.
