The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has closed its investigation into the injury of a 48-year-old man arrested in Brantford last October.
According to the SIU, the man was involved in a physical altercation with several officers during his arrest on October 16, 2024. A few days later, while in custody for an unrelated matter, he complained of rib pain and was taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed a right-sided rib fracture.
Preliminary findings suggest the injury was likely caused by knee strikes delivered by a special constable involved in the arrest. However, because special constables are not under SIU jurisdiction, the agency has terminated the case and will not proceed with further investigation.
The SIU, an independent civilian agency, investigates incidents in Ontario involving police officers where death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault occur. In this case, the agency determined it lacked the authority to pursue charges, closing the file.
