Residents in Norfolk County are being urged to take precautions as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect.
Bitterly cold temperatures and wind chill values near -30°C are expected early this morning, though conditions will improve later with daytime heating.
Environment Canada warns that extreme cold poses serious health risks, particularly for young children, older adults, individuals with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and those without adequate shelter.
Signs of cold-related health concerns include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Muscle pain and weakness
- Numbness and skin discoloration in fingers and toes
Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially in windy conditions. Officials advise dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and limiting time outdoors.
Additionally, pet owners are reminded: If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet. Ensure pets have proper shelter and avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures.
Stay informed with the latest weather updates and take precautions to stay safe in these frigid conditions.
