A growing concern is spreading online within the LGBTQ+ community over recent decisions made south of the border.
President Donald Trump’s two-gender policy and the United States’ stance on transgender issues have raised fears that similar attitudes could influence policies in Canada.
We spoke with Jason Mayo from Haldimand-Norfolk PRIDE.
Mayo says that language and societal views evolve over time, and this is exactly what is happening in discussions about gender identity.
He acknowledges that for some people, gender diversity can be a difficult concept to grasp. However, he emphasizes that just because something doesn’t “make sense” to someone, it doesn’t mean they should have the right to dictate how others live their lives.
Concerns about these U.S. policies influencing Canada have been amplified recently following comments made by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.
During a recent interview, Poilievre was asked about gender identity and responded by saying he was only aware of two genders.
Mayo says that while statements like this can be hurtful, it’s also important to recognize the progress that has been made in Canada—including right here in Haldimand-Norfolk.
He acknowledges that advancing LGBTQ+ rights isn’t always an easy journey, but he encourages people to move forward with pride and resilience.
Finally, Mayo reminds trans individuals in Haldimand-Norfolk that support is available.
For those feeling concerned or impacted by recent rhetoric, there are safe spaces and resources to help.
