Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is resigning as Liberal Leader and Prime Minister.
He made the announcement from his official residence, Rideau Cottage.
Trudeau’s intention is to stay on as Prime Minister until the party choses a new leader. He has met with Governor General Mary Simon and asked that Parliament be prorogued until March 24th. That would prevent a confidence vote from bringing down the government, while they chose a new leader.
The move comes after a turbulent few weeks for the Prime Minister as calls for his resignation grew within the party across the country, and mid-December resignation from cabinet of Chrystia Freeland.
Trudeau has led the Liberals since 2013 and has been Prime Minister since 2015.
