Fanshawe College’s new Practical Nursing (RPN) program at the Simcoe/Norfolk Regional Campus is preparing local students for meaningful healthcare careers while addressing a critical nursing shortage in Norfolk County. Launched in partnership with Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) and the Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home (NHNH), the two-year program welcomed its first class of 23 students in 2024. These students, set to graduate in 2026, are gaining the skills and experience needed to make an immediate impact.
Mackenzie Dickens, from Delhi, has dreamed of becoming a nurse since childhood. Inspired by her father’s sudden passing, she sees nursing as a way to help others during their most vulnerable moments. “Nursing is the most rewarding thing someone can do,” she shared.
Lexi Pollet, also from Delhi, chose nursing to make a difference in her community. She appreciates studying close to home and gaining hands-on experience through clinical placements at NHNH.
Both students are excited to start hospital placements at NGH in January, where they’ll build on their knowledge and prepare for their future careers.
Donna Gates, Acting Dean of Fanshawe’s Simcoe/Norfolk Regional Campus, emphasized the program’s importance. “It supports our local labour needs and helps students learn, work, and stay in the community.” Fanshawe’s program is helping to create the next generation of healthcare professionals in Norfolk.
