Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is stepping up efforts to combat a growing threat: cryptocurrency investment scams. The new initiative, known as Project Atlas, is a specialized task force focused on preventing fraud linked to cryptocurrency investments, a problem that has left many victims with significant financial losses.
Media Relations and Community Safety Officer, Constable Craig Soldan says this unit is dedicated to investigating cyber crimes related to cryptocurrency, particularly scams that mislead people into investing in fake platforms.
Project Atlas is designed to help prevent all kinds of investment incidents. The team works proactively to identify individuals caught up in fraudulent schemes and warn them before further investments are made. One of the key goals is to alert people about scams and to guide them on how to protect themselves from losing their money.
The program is not limited to any one area; it operates across Ontario. The OPP team works closely with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and if necessary, collaborates with other law enforcement agencies, both in Canada and internationally, to track down scammers.
Constable Soldan emphasized the importance of contacting trusted sources for any investment decisions. He advised people to work with licensed professionals and avoid investing through platforms found on social media or unsolicited messages, which are often fraudulent.
For those who suspect they have been scammed or want to learn more about Project Atlas, the OPP provides resources online. Victims can report scams through the toll-free number 1-888-495-8501 or by visiting the OPP’s website.
