A devastating house fire broke out at a century home near Old Highway 24 and 11th Concession Townsend in Waterford on Wednesday at around 4:45 p.m. Flames were visible through the roof when firefighters from five Norfolk County stations arrived.
Two occupants were home at the time. One was treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital and later released. Several pets also escaped unharmed. Fire Prevention Officer Cory Armstrong-Smith credited working smoke alarms for ensuring the timely escape of the residents.
The fire, which is still under investigation, is not considered suspicious. The home, valued at $500,000, was insured, but the tenants’ belongings were not.
Norfolk County Roads Department assisted by salting the icy conditions to keep the area safe for firefighters. Residents are reminded of the importance of functional smoke alarms to save lives.
