The Ontario Phragmites Action (OPA) program has opened the 2025 Invasive Phragmites Control Fund (IPCF) for proposals. The fund, supported by an $11 million investment from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, aims to help communities like Norfolk County tackle the spread of Phragmites, a destructive invasive plant.
Local groups like municipalities, conservation authorities, Indigenous communities, and non-profits are encouraged to apply for funding of up to $50,000 per project. Proposals can focus on mapping, monitoring, control efforts, or innovative solutions.
Graydon Smith, Minister of Natural Resources, emphasized the importance of protecting Ontario’s environment and economy, while Colin Cassin from the Invasive Species Centre highlighted the need for community action.
Since 2022, 71 projects have been funded, improving ecosystems and reducing Phragmites’ impact on agriculture, tourism, and public safety. Applications are open now at www.invasivespeciescentre.ca/grants.
