The ongoing conflict between the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post has reached a critical stage, causing major disruptions across Canada. Essential services, including parcel deliveries for medications and official documents, have been affected, impacting small businesses, charities, seniors, and remote communities.
Negotiations, supported by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), and the appointment of a special mediator have failed to resolve the impasse.
The federal government has invoked its powers under the Canada Labour Code to address the issue. The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) will assess whether agreements can be reached by the end of 2024. If not, CIRB may order operations to resume and extend current agreements until May 2025. We heard from JoAnne Horton our local President of CUPW Local 605, and she anticipates being ordered back to work before Christmas.
To find a long-term solution, an Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC) will recommend strategies by May 15, 2025. The government urges all parties to cooperate in restoring postal services and protecting Canadians’ interests.
