We recently spoke to Joanne Horton, President of Simcoe Local 605, outside the Canada Post building on Norfolk St. Horton let us know that our local postal workers are ensuring Santa letters reach the North Pole, despite ongoing postal strikes.
Children need to include their full address, phone number and contact information on their letters—no stamp or self-addressed envelope required.
Santa has promised replies will be delivered before Christmas, either through parent pickups or in-town deliveries.
As the strike continues Horton remains positive and hopes an agreement can be reached soon.
Community support has been strong and Horton shared stories of local businesses and residents dropping off hot beverages and snacks.
While chatting with us a local doctor donated $50 for those on the picket line to get coffee and offered encouragement.
When it comes to the negotiations themselves Horton highlighted the most important topics on her members minds.
The call for a safer work environment was echoed by those gathered around. Whether is be unsafe delivery locations, dog bites or equipment there seemed to be a need for safer conditions.
Despite these challenges, the local team is dedicated to spreading holiday cheer while advocating for safer working conditions.
