Mayor Amy Martin wants staff to focus on existing underused or under developed buildings and encourage developers to utilize them before breaking new ground for housing.
The Development Infill Incentive Program, if passed at a future council meeting, would have staff look at ways to bring more housing to Norfolk with already available properties.
This would hopefully take away some of the concerns council faces about new developments popping up.
With that, Martin says the goal isn’t to just “fill” any existing property with as much housing as possible.
They are looking for the best options available and to have something to get developers on board.
Martin has often noted that Norfolk’s financial situation is not good.
She is hoping ideas like this can help bring more people in and, in turn, help take some of the burden off existing tax payers.
This was brought up at a Notice of Motion, meaning it will be officially debated at a council meeting in the future.
