Further to our story on Trillium Care Norwich retirement home officially closed Monday (Nov. 11), leaving families scrambling to find new housing for their loved ones. The closure follows allegations of financial mismanagement and a fraud investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
The home announced on Oct. 25 that it would shut down, citing a lack of revenue. By Nov. 8th, all residents had been relocated to other facilities or with family.
Families reported significant challenges, including rent hikes and missing payments. Staff at the home also faced hardships, with reports of unpaid wages for October. Two GoFundMe campaigns raised approximately $1,800 for the affected workers before being shut down.
The Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority is now investigating non-compliance with Ontario’s Retirement Homes Act. The OPP investigation into the alleged fraud is ongoing.
