Haldimand-Norfolk Health and Social Services is giving away free radon test kits to residents this winter as part of Health Canada’s “100 Radon Test Kit Challenge.” Radon, a colorless gas found in many homes, is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Through this program, 100 households will receive free kits to help identify and reduce high radon levels in their homes.
A virtual Radon Information Session will take place on November 13th, at 7:00 p.m., where experts will explain radon’s health risks and provide testing instructions. Interested residents can sign up at takeactiononradon.ca. Kit pick-up runs from November 14–22 at local health unit locations in Simcoe, Caledonia, and Dunnville. Participants can pick up their radon test kits 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at any of the following locations:
- Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, 200-185 Robinson Street, Simcoe
- Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, 100 Haddington Street, Caledonia
- Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit,117 Forest Street East, Dunnville
Dr. Anne-Marie Nicol, a radon researcher, notes that reducing radon exposure can help prevent lung cancer. Take Action on Radon, a national initiative, encourages Canadians to test their homes, especially during winter when radon levels are highest.
