The Simcoe Sabres football team has steamrolled through the 2024 season, going a perfect 5-0. Led by quarterback Andrew Fekete (#5), running back Leo Wardell (#11), and safety Brody Walsh (#14). The three sat down with us on the sidelines and reflected on what worked for them this season. Wardell emphasized that the Sabres’ defense has been their biggest weapon.
Walsh agreed with Wardell’s appraisal adding that the defensive secondary is where the Sabres really shine.
Quarterback Andrew Fekete, feels he has improved his passing game this year, as well as understanding pocket pressure.
However, when the Sabres arrived at training camp this year they were short at the offensive lineman position. They had no returning players at this position and they scrambled to find new recruits. It’s such an important position, and the newly assembled O-Line has been working hard to keep the Sabres rolling to the endzone. Praise for centre Liam Henderson was given, as he has anchored the new squad of hogs.
Head Coach Marc Bertrand couldn’t be prouder of his team and the all-volunteer coaching staff, which includes nine coaches—two-thirds of them under 25 years old, with two former Sabres and two former Titans bringing fresh ideas and energy.
This Friday’s game will see a playoff rematch against the Pauline Johnson Thunderbirds at Simcoe Composite School. Home-field advantage, for the Sabres is a matter of pride according to Walsh.
Fekete agreed and noted that the hometown crowd is always great and appreciated.
The Sabres kick-off their playoff run this Friday at 2pm at Simcoe Composite School.
Elsewhere in playoff action the 4-1 Delhi Raiders will host the McKinnon Park Blue Devil’s who are surging with a 3 game win streak. That game is also this Friday at 2pm in Delhi.
