We spoke with Jim Cation of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Port Dover and he began to tell us the story of the steeple. He described the steeple and the church, as integral parts of the community. A curious statement when you first hear it, but Cation went on to explain the steeple is the highest point in Port Dover.
The church is rich with the history of Port Dover and it’s nautical roots. There is an annual service each February called the “blessing of the nets” service. Done specifically for the fishermen before they start the season. Cation went on to explain there is a special stained glass window as well.
In order to keep and maintain this rich history St. Paul’s Anglican Church is hosting a special concert to raise funds for the ongoing restoration of its iconic steeple. The event, dubbed Rock Around the Steeple, will take place on Saturday, November 23rd, at 6 p.m. at the Port Dover Community Centre.
The concert will feature the band 50 Mission, known for performing music by The Tragically Hip, along with local artist Felicia McMinn as the opening act. The evening will kick off with a reception offering local food, drinks, and a silent auction. There will also be a live auction for a piece of history; the original top of the steeple, which stood tall for over 100 years before being replaced in May 2024.
Tickets are available online at Showpass.
