It is Wilkinson’s, Your Independent Grocer Seeds of Success; a look at leaders in the local agricultural sector…fueled by Kubota.
Today we are looking at Beef producers…presented by Brody’s Mechanical Services.
Bryan Gilvesy is one of the folks running Y U Ranch, where they raise Texas Longhorn cattle. The ranch’s name stands out—it’s a nod to Bryan’s grandfather and their Hungarian roots. When the family moved to Canada, some letters got dropped from the last name, and the “Y U” is a tribute to that heritage.
At the ranch, Bryan says they jumped on board with the ALUS program pretty early, aiming to be as eco-friendly as possible while raising cattle. They planted grass to create a natural environment for the animals, which ended up having some great side effects.
For one, the grass helped boost the organic matter in the soil. That’s led to more wildlife thriving on the land—Bryan’s spotted more bees and birds around, which is always a good sign.
As for the Longhorns, they chose this breed for a reason. These cattle are naturally tough, more resistant to diseases, can give birth without help, and are super efficient at turning grass into protein.
