Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, warns against consuming certain Silk® and Great Value plant-based beverages due to potential Listeria contamination. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall on July 8, 2024. Consumers should check the CFIA website for a full list of recalled products and updates.
Ontarians are advised to discard or return any recalled beverages. Listeria contamination does not affect the smell, taste, or appearance of food. Nine listeriosis cases and five hospitalizations have been reported in Ontario linked to these products.
Dr. Moore urges high-risk individuals, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weak immune systems, to avoid these beverages. The Ministry of Health is collaborating with public health agencies on this matter.
