Toronto city staff are examining the feasibility of taking over operations of the Ontario Science Centre after the provincial government announced the building’s abrupt closure a week ago.
Mayor Olivia Chow supported a motion this week which also asked staff to examine whether the Ontario government has any legal duty to maintain or operate the facility, which first opened in 1969.
Chow says her office has been inundated with messages from people hoping to save the science centre.
Provincial plans were already in the works to relocate the facility from its current east Toronto location to Ontario Place, a smaller site which is not set to open until 2028.
