It started like any other Monday soccer night for the Proctor family, until Meghan Proctor collided with another player. She would be taken to Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) and an x-ray revealed she suffered a severe break, that would require surgery at Brantford General Hospital (BGH). The plan was to transfer Meghan then next day to Brantford, but that’s not what happened. Her husband Jeremy shared the actual time line with us.
The timeline for being transferred kept getting moved back and back. After five days of see his wife in horrible pain, Jeremy took to social media to voice his family’s frustrations and current situation.
The Facebook post took off being shared hundreds of times. Jeremy received messages of support from all over Canada and the world even. People who had similar experience with a healthcare system that Jeremy describes as “broken” ironically. Two hours after the Facebook post published, a space opened at BGH. Meaghan was transferred on Friday and underwent surgery Saturday evening.
The Proctors hold the system responsible, they had only good things to say about the staff at the two hospitals.
Now the Proctor’s are searching for answers. Why did this happen the way it did? One might wonder if maybe it wasn’t a severe injury? But, that is not the case, Jeremy describes what was done to repair Meghan’s leg.
The 39-year-old mother of two will need at least 6 months to fully recover.
The family reached out to Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady who said this kind of experience “is absolutely disgusting in the province of Ontario“. Brady says she questioned the Minister of Health in June, asking “why Ontario’s healthcare system is in such disrepair, and was basically told it’s not.”
“That’s not true,” Brady replied, “As sad as this example is, it’s happening all over Ontario.”
