Fireworks will be going off all over Norfolk County this long weekend.
The biggest one being Monday in Port Dover to close out a full day of Canada Day celebrations.
With that, fireworks can be very scary for pets and the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is urging the public to take extra precautions to help prevent lost pet this weekend.
Unexpected loud noises and flashing lights can make our companions feel anxious, and some animals will even run away in fear and become lost.
Kiersten Bell, spokesperson with the OSPCA, shared with Norfolk Today some of the ways you can keep your pet calm and safe.
The OSPCA recommends making sure your pet is wearing a properly fitted collar and ID tag or have them micro chipped.
Create a safe place for them to hide during the fireworks. Close the curtains, place a blanket over their crate, or turn on the TV/some quiet music to drown out the noise.
Even if your dog seems to be okay with fireworks, it’s best to leave them at home.
Bell shared with us what to do if you do become separated with your pet.
You should also contact your local animal centre and animal control to see if anyone has found your furry friend.
