Haldimand Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley could not hold back her words following a controversial motion being passed at council on Wednesday.
Haldimand County waived their procedural bylaw yesterday to bring forward a motion from Councillor Stewart Patterson.
The intent – to ensure MPP Bobbi Ann Brady would not attend any meetings involving the county at the upcoming AMO conference.
Council members began taking the floor with their stance on the issue, most of them standing behind Patterson on the issue.
Rob Shirton was the first to put weight behind it.
Some had issues with the idea, like Marie Trainer.
Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley also took time in between councillors to add her two cents as well.
Patterson, who brought forward the motion, took issue with the point of allowing Brady to be part of the meetings because she was voted in.
One thing that Bentley noted as well was Brady having a good relationship with some of the ministers, including the Minister of Infrastructure.
That is something Councillor Dan Lawrence did question.
Lawrence also questioned why they should be backing Brady simply because she was elected, when she advocated strongly against council when they approved the MZO decision in Nanticoke – not supporting members around the table who were also elected in.
John Metcalfe also worried about the tone of these meetings if Brady was there.
Things did start to heat up when Patrick O’Neil added his opinion on the matter, causing this back and forth with Mayor Bentley.
In the end, the motion was passed – leading to Bentley’s “disgusting” remark.
When Patterson asked why the motion was “disgusting”, Bentley gladly responded.
Now a letter will be sent to Brady asking her not to attend these meetings.
