The Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit wants everyone to stay safe during this heat wave.
A Heat Warning remains in effect for the area with no relief in sight.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Locke is concerned not only about the high temperatures, but how quickly it hit.
It’s important during this heat to find ways to stay cool.
If you do not have air conditioning, she highly suggests seeking alternatives even if it’s for a brief break.
The Splash Pads have extended hours now from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., with Dr. Locke suggesting that yes, even adults can enjoy a stroll through the water in this heat.
Despite the heat, people still need to work outdoors and there are still sports taking place for kids – so be mindful.
We also spoke with Dr. Locke regarding backyard gatherings, as they will still continue regardless of temperatures.
She knows a lot of people look forward to a cold drink at the tail end of a long hot day – but be careful.
If you are living in a home with air conditioning, the heat may not be top of mind if you are staying indoors.
But she asks that you do try to think of others right now who may not have the luxury.
Along with the heat, the sun is beaming down hard.
UV index’s for the past few days have been very high, leading to quick sunburns.
The HNHU recommends taking the following actions to stay cool:
· Stay indoors in an air-conditioned environment.
· Drink plenty of cool liquids, especially water, before feeling thirsty.
· Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabric.
· Take cool showers or baths until you feel refreshed.
· Take a break from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place.
· Block sun out by closing awnings, curtains, or blinds during the day.
· If you must be outdoors, avoid sun exposure by staying in the shade; wear a wide-brimmed, breathable hat or use an umbrella.
· Plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day (the early morning or in the evening).
· Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.
