Rumours are swirling that the Progressive Conservatives could be laying down the groundwork for an early election.
When asked specifically about this during a recent announcement connected to moving up the dates for alcohol sales at convenience stores, Premier Doug Ford did not not outright deny it.
Since then, more reports have come out indicating that one of the reasons that Ford may want an early election has to do with early polls indicating that Pierre Poilievre is polling well ahead in the upcoming Federal Election – and that is something our local MPP Bobbi Ann Brady believes may be a factor.
Brady has heard the rumours like everyone else in Ontario, but feels like triggering an early election would be a mistake in the long run.
That being said, if it IS called – Brady says she is ready.
With that, Brady anticipates a tough race to the seat.
Many are looking at the upcoming Provincial election in the riding of Haldimand-Norfolk with interest.
Having been a Conservative strong hold for years, it came as a surprise to many across the province and within the PC party when Brady, an independent, took the seat – and she anticipates they will be coming in strong to try and reclaim it.
So, the next election could prove to be a real battle ground for the PC party.
Earlier this year, following a question from Brady, Premier Ford made his plans clear – telling her at Queen’s Park that he plans on getting her out of this job at the next election.
She just wonders if they have learned their lessons from 2022.
As the only Independent MPP in Ontario, Brady has had a unique vantage point – which has come with praise and also some skepticism.
Brady is hoping that, if an election is triggered, votes will continue to fight against the status quo.
The 44th general election is tentatively scheduled to be held on June 4th, 2026, unless a decision is made to call it early.
