Careless smoking caused $250,000 worth of damage in a Waterford house fire.
Wednesday morning, the Norfolk County Fire Department was dispatched to a deck fire on Sovereign Street. Upon arrival fire crews discovered the fire had reached the eaves of the home and was now in the attic.
Crews from Waterford, Simcoe, Teeterville and Delhi contained the fire to the attic space, and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
The investigation determined the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette on the rear deck of the home.
Norfolk County Fire Department would like to remind the community to discard smoking materials safely – fully extinguish butts with water and discard in a non-combustible container.
