Some teachers and principals in Ontario say the provincial government’s proposal to let principals assign teachers without technological credentials to teach certain tech courses starting this September is an example how the government is not prepared to implement its own policies.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced last year that high school students will have to take a course on technology and the skilled trades in Grade 9 or 10 in order to graduate, starting next year.
But Ontario Principals Council president Ralph Nigro says there is already a shortage of teachers and creating a new mandatory course that teachers have to find a way to teach is adding more burden on overworked educators.
Lecce says the government has taken action to recruit and retain qualified educators across Ontario.
