Educators in Ontario are calling on the province to come up with a real solution to staff shortages after Ministry of Education asked to let retired teachers work longer.
The Ontario Teachers’ Federation says due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been reluctantly allowing retired teachers work for 95 days a year instead of 50 over the last three years.
But it says that was supposed to be a short-term measure to deal with the lingering effects of the pandemic and it is now rebuffing the province’s request to let retired teachers working longer.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says he is disappointed by the rejection as the proposal was supported by provincial trustee associations and the Ontario Principals Council.
