A decision has been made regarding the community flag pole in Simcoe.
After much debate at last week’s meeting, Norfolk County Council agreed on the rules for the flag pole at Governor Simcoe Square.
The newly erected community flag pole allows community groups the opportunity to have their flag flown at Governor Simcoe Square to observe specific events, while also giving the county the ability to fly the Canadian, provincial, and county flags, alongside these special flags.
Last week, Councillor Chris Van Paassen suggested an amendment that would allow groups to only have their flag flown for a maximum of seven days. This amendment was in contradiction to the policy, sparking debate with the item eventually being deferred to this week.
The policy was once again brought forward, without a limit on the number of days, listing out different rules as to what flags can be flown, and dates when specific flags will be raised.
Among those rules, it says they cannot have matters of politics, religious conviction, events with no relationship to Norfolk County, or campaigns intended for profit-making purposes.
Van Paassen made an amendment to the policy, changing the wording slightly.
It originally read “The Pride Flag (flown for the month of June)” but has been changed to “in the month of June” to allow for other groups hoping to have their flag raised in the month of June if requested.
Mayor Amy Martin was happy with the conclusion of the discussion.
The policy was passed unanimously.
