Earlier this month students from Valley Heights Secondary School spent their day planting wildflowers.
This took place at the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Upper Big Creek Block property in Walsingham as part of a push to help pollinators.
Monarch butterflies, a formerly common pollinator in backyard gardens, are now considered a species at risk as their numbers drop significantly.
Andrew Holland, a spokesperson for NCC, said the plants benefit a lot of animals in the area.
The students planted 2,000 plugs and restoration seeds, but there are smaller ways you can help in your own backyard.
He also suggested asking for suggestions at your local garden centre.
