The Woodland Cultural Centre’s aim is to undo the harm the residential schools in Canada caused.
That is how executive director Janis Monture explained their work.
She said it is important to look back and remember the past so it doesn’t happen again, but also important to look towards the future.
The centre, which is on the ground of the former Mohawk Institute Residential School in Brantford, will be closed on September 30 and October 1 for a private event.
When asked what truth and reconciliation means to her, Monture said she believes we are still in the truth phase, adding the cultural centre is always working with survivors to collect their testimonials and get their history out to the community.
They are currently under construction with the goal to reopen the centre in 2024.
The museum and gallery building remains open for tours. Workshops and virtual tours are also available.
