Seeing the pride flag fluttering over Waterford District High School starting last Tuesday was “a big deal” for teacher Jason Mayo.
That sense of achievement quickly turned to disappointment Thursday when the flag was stolen from the school.
But Mayo says the community support building up to the flags being raised, and the outcry after it’s theft, has shown him that the actions of one individual does not represent the people of Waterford or Norfolk County.
Mayo said after he posted about the flag being stolen, his inbox was flooded with messages with people asking what they could do to help.
He said that he is proud of his community, and shows that small towns are just as progressive as the big cities.
The pride flag was flying alongside the school’s Six Nations flag which has been removed until both can be raised again.
The plan is to raise the flags higher next time.
Mayo said they did have a back up flag, whether the flag be damaged by the weather or, sadly, get vandalized or stolen like it was.
